NPOP vs NOP Organic Certification for Kerala Exporters: Complete Guide 2025

Last updated: June 2025 | Blueberry FM — Kerala's Premier Export Services Facilitator

Kerala is one of India's leading producers of organic spices, coconut products, tea, coffee, and tropical fruits. If you want to export organic products from Kerala, you need to understand the difference between NPOP (India's national organic standard) and NOP (the US organic standard). This guide explains both and helps you choose the right certification for your target market.

NPOP — National Programme for Organic Production (India)

NPOP is India's national organic certification standard, administered by APEDA under the Ministry of Commerce. It covers organic crop production, livestock, processing, and handling. NPOP-certified products can be exported to the EU, Switzerland, UK, and other markets that recognise NPOP equivalence.

Key advantage: NPOP has EU equivalence, meaning NPOP-certified products can be sold as organic in the EU without additional EU certification. This is a major advantage for Kerala exporters targeting European markets.

Certification bodies: LACON India, OneCert Asia, Control Union, IMO, Ecocert India, and other APEDA-accredited bodies.

NOP — National Organic Program (USA)

NOP is the USDA's organic certification standard, mandatory for all organic products sold in the USA above USD 5,000 annual sales. NOP certification is issued by USDA-accredited certifiers, including both US-based and international certifiers.

Key advantage: NOP is the only certification accepted for the US organic market. If you want to export organic products to the USA, NOP certification is mandatory.

Certification bodies: CCOF, Oregon Tilth, OCIA, OneCert (also NOP-accredited), Control Union (also NOP-accredited).

Equivalence Agreements

India and the USA have a partial equivalence arrangement under which NPOP-certified products can be exported to the USA as organic for certain product categories. However, this equivalence is not comprehensive and has limitations. Always verify current equivalence status with APEDA and your certifier before exporting.

NPOP has full equivalence with the EU organic regulation (EC 834/2007 and its successor EU 2018/848), allowing NPOP-certified products to be sold as organic in all EU member states.

Which Certification Should You Get?

Get NPOP if:
Your target markets are the EU, UK, Switzerland, or domestic India. NPOP is cheaper, faster, and gives EU market access without additional certification.
Get NOP if:
Your target market is the USA. NOP is mandatory for US organic sales above USD 5,000.
Get both NPOP and NOP if:
You want to export to both EU and USA markets. Many Kerala exporters hold both certifications. Some certifiers offer combined NPOP+NOP audits to reduce cost and time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is NPOP certification mandatory to export organic products from India?
Yes. All organic products exported from India must be certified under NPOP by an APEDA-accredited certification body. Uncertified products cannot be labelled or marketed as organic in export markets.
How long does the organic conversion period take?
For most crops, the conversion period is 36 months under NOP and 12–36 months under NPOP (depending on the crop and prior land use). During conversion, products cannot be sold as certified organic.
Can I get NPOP certification for a small farm in Kerala?
Yes. NPOP certification is available for farms of all sizes. Group certification is available for small farmers through farmer producer organisations (FPOs), which significantly reduces per-farmer cost.
Does Blueberry FM help with organic certification?
Yes. Blueberry FM facilitates the organic certification process by connecting Kerala exporters with APEDA-accredited certification bodies and guiding them through the documentation and inspection process. View our Organic Certification Service →
